New leadership of Social democrats EDEK in Cyprus supports the efforts of Socialists International for peacemaking in Mediterranean and the end of conflicts, stressing out that what is happening now in Syria, Iraq, Kurds people, Western Sahara, Palestine and what is still happening in Cyprus is a human tragedy beyond all comprehensions.
Saying this, we underline the fact that a small country like Cyprus with limited recourses can only rely on EU for implementing its foreign policy in the region, which is focused on offering help to its neighbors and contributing in the formation of a more engaged EU regional policy for the Middle East.
EDEK has participated at the SI meeting that was held in Barcelona between 25th – 26th October 2015. Mrs. Vasiliadou, A’ Vice-President, who has represented the party at the summit, has made it clear that Socialists International organization, in which the party is a full member since 1987, should be more proactive and closer to the Socialists Ideology, promoting Cyprus’ people fundamental human rights and a democratic solution based on UN resolutions, European and International Law and the Aqui Communautaire. And that the Cyprus problem is not a bicommunal problem between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots but a problem of invasion and occupation by a foreign force, Turkey. This was said i8n the presence of the Turkish representative, who is the Vice President of SI.
Efforts on formulating a more clear framework on the position of the SI on the Cyprus problem will continue in the future.
